How does a farmer know when to retire?

It's empowering for farmers to be realistic about how many good working years might be ahead of them, says farm business consultant Don Fraser.

Don has plenty of advice for farmers thinking about retirement.

Don's 72, and he reckons, with the improvement in medical care, he should surpass the age his grandfather and father reached and maybe make it to 90.

"That's 18 years I've got. Not very long.

"So what am I going to do with that time and am I going to be realistic and talk to my children about how it's going to look for them?"

Don says better decisions are made when you work with a time frame.

"It really empowers you to make the changes you need because we have the attitude that we'll live forever, but it ain't true. It just ain't true."
