Auckland's biggest supplier of sand for concrete is appealing a decision to stop taking it from Pakiri Beach.
McCallum Bros has been sucking up sand from three different depths, but Auckland Council's decided the risks are too high for it to keep extracting from the 'far shore' section of the coast.
Industry reps say it could lead to a shortage of sand for construction, infrastructure, and sports grounds.
