Self-isolation plan for travellers will rely on good will

From Checkpoint, 5:07 pm on 3 February 2022

Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins says people travelling to New Zealand do not currently need to have had their booster shots, but he's not ruling it out for the future.

He spoke to Checkpoint about the plans to reopen the border, including self-isolation, which he says will heavily rely on "people doing the right thing".

“It's going to be a system that does rely on a good degree of people doing the right thing and people following the rules. It won't be monitored or enforced in every individual case because we are going to be talking about potentially large number of people crossing the border and it's not feasible to follow up every individual person.”

Hipkins told Checkpoint it does rely on “a degree of trust”.

“If you think about our COVID-19 response, that's been the case all along, when we do our level three or level four restrictions as we did previously, we relied on people following the rules and New Zealanders did follow the rules. We didn't have a police officer on every street corner.”
