Landlords 'gobsmacked' by new law for commercial tenants

A cut-price Covid-19 rent clause that has been added to legislation has blindsided some property managers.

The amendment to the Property Law Act would mean commercial tenants will not have to pay full rent if they cannot do business as usual due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Landlords can only demand a "fair proportion" of what is due and both sides have to agree on that amount.

Leonie Freeman is chief executive of the Property Council. She tells Lisa Owen she is gobsmacked.
