Waikato mayor disappointed prisoner bailed into region

From Checkpoint, 5:24 pm on 20 September 2021

Parts of the Hauraki plains have effectively been ring-fenced and placed into alert level 4 for at least five days.

It takes in an area near Miranda where there are three new Covid-19 cases including a prisoner who travelled out level 4 into a level 2 area as part of his bail conditions.

People inside the ring-fenced area must stay at home and monitor for symptoms for the next five days and can only go for food or medical treatment, following a new health order.

Waikato District Mayor Allan Sanson told Checkpoint he is disappointed the prisoner who has tested positive for Covid-19 was bailed to an address in the Waikato when one in Auckland was also available.

He told DPMC this morning how disappointed he was in the decision.

"I thought Department of Corrections would have applied a bit of common sense as well, knowing that they would potentially go across the border... I just can't understand the rationale at all.

"it just shows that some people seem to think it's all right … we can just move freely across the border. I've never had so much rubbish in all my life."
