The investigation into how a man infected with Covid-19 was able to abscond from a quarantine hotel continues amid revelations he left his room via a fire escape that should have been alarmed, hid in bushes and then scaled two fences to run home.

A review of CCTV shows after escaping the Novotel Quarantine hotel in Ellerslie, the man walked more than 10 kilometres across town to an Otāhuhu property.

The man, who has been charged, was arrested by police in full PPE and is now under guard at the Jet Park hotel.

The Joint Head of MIQ, Brigadier Rose King told Lisa Owen security had been bolstered at the hotel in recent days.
