A man who had tested positive for Covid-19 has been arrested after escaping from a quarantine facility in Auckland.

He was last seen at the Ellerslie facility at one this morning, and police were alerted just after 10.30am.

The man was found 13km away at a house in Otāhuhu early this afternoon.

Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins could not say how he got there or how many people may have been exposed to Covid-19.

He says a review of CCTV footage from the quarantine centre is underway.

But Hipkins says there will be an investigation to get to the bottom of what happened.

The Prime Minister was briefed about the alleged escape just before the 1pm update today.

A spokesperson says it was a "live" situation then and the Prime Minister wouldn't talk about it while it was still underway.
