More than 500 people in Afghanistan eligible to come to New Zealand may be left to their own fate as the overnight bombing at Kabul Airport puts an end to further Defence Force evacuation flights.

ISIS-K - an Islamic State affiliate has claimed responsibility for the attacks - which killed 60 people including 13 US service members.

But as Andrew McRae reports, the government says it's not giving up on helping those stranded in Afghanistan.
