Westland Mayor nervous about extended lockdown

The whole country will remain in Covid-19 Level 4 lockdown until the end of the week.

That includes the South Island, despite the fact there have been no cases detected yet.

Bruce Smith is the Westland Mayor. He tells Lisa Owen he's nervous about lockdown being extended every few days, as there is not the certainty needed.

Smith said he's "a bit disappointed" about the lockdown extension.

"There are no cases in the South Island and to shut down the entire South Island economy ... just seems to be something that is a stretch too far."

Caution was great, he said, but it needed to be balanced with the support of the people and the sake of the economy.

"There are no cases. Surely there would be a case for dropping the South Island back down to say level 2."

The island could go back up levels if any cases appeared, he said.

People could remain compliant with lockdowns if the population knew what was happening, he said.

"If it goes round where there is no definite time frames and no definite set of causes ... you will start to lose them."
