The Football Ferns will take a knee before their first match at the Olympic Games tonight.

They're kicking off their Games campaign at 11:30pm against Australia.

The head of the New Zealand Olympic team, Rob Waddell, says he fully supports the players as they become some of the first Olympic athletes to advocate for social justice under new IOC guidelines.

RNZ sports reporter Clay Wilson is in Tokyo with the latest.
