The government is making it compulsory for a further 1800 people to be vaccinated for Covid-19, covering privately-employed border workers.

Until now, it has only been compulsory for people who work in MIQ facilities, some cabin crew and government officials who work in high-risk border settings to be vaccinated.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says the requirement will soon be widened to include more workers who are at greatest risk of catching the virus.

82 percent of active border workers are fully vaccinated and two percent are awaiting their second dose.

But only 54 percent of active port workers have been fully vaccinated.

Jacinda Ardern said the vaccination rate of private employees hasn't been high enough.

All government employees affected by the order must have had their first dose by August 26, and privately employed border workers by the end of September.
