Govt considers more QR scanning, mask wearing rules

From Checkpoint, 6:12 pm on 28 June 2021

Compulsory QR scanning and more mask wearing could be on the cards as Cabinet weighs up its options.

The government has been under pressure to make more Covid-19 measures mandatory, after an Australian tourist visited Wellington before testing positive with the Delta variant of the virus.

The use of the Covid-19 tracer app has plummeted in recent months - with less than a third of the contacts of the Sydney traveller scanning in to locations of interest.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says QR codes could be made compulsory in high risk settings, as well as bars and restaurants.

She says there are legal and practical considerations, including enforcement.

Cabinet will also consider whether to change the rules around mask use at alert level two or higher.

Currently, face masks are only mandatory on public transport - but Jacinda Ardern says they could soon be compulsory in other settings.
