The government should pay people to send their old petrol cars to the scrap heap, according to the Motor Trade Association.

Transport belches out nearly half of New Zealand's carbon emissions. The final report from the Climate Commission recommends a ban on the import of petrol vehicles from the early 2030s.

But the MTA's chief executive Craig Pomare believes it's a step too far and there should be an incentive to clean-up the 5.5 million vehicles on New Zealand roads right now.
