New cycling, walking bridge cops flak from advocates on all sides

Plans to build a $700 million bike bridge have been deemed totally unnecessary, when a lane of the existing Auckland Harbour Bridge could be used instead.

That's the response of one cycling advocate to the government's announcement of an extra harbour crossing for cyclists and walkers.

But a trucking leader says the priorities are backwards and motor vehicles need to zip across the harbour, not what he thinks will be a few cyclists.
