Waikato DHB has an obligation to notify individuals whose data has been leaked in documents sent to media from hackers, Privacy Commissioner John Edwards has told Checkpoint.
"It is really important those individuals whose information may be in circulation are told of that, so that they can take steps to protect themselves.
"[Waikato DHB] are very busy, obviously with this crisis at the moment, we've given them advice about their obligations when we saw this information.
"In fact, when we got in touch with them, they hadn't even seen the emails that had been released to news media. They've received that from us.
"So they are not yet aware of how many patient details may be compromised as a result of this breach," Edwards said.
