A New Zealander who is associated with Islamic State will return to New Zealand after their passport or citizenship of another nation was revoked.

In a High Court judgement released this afternoon, Justice Ellis said the person poses a real risk of engaging in terrorism related activities on their return to New Zealand.

As such, they'll be closely monitored under a one year interim control order which was sought by the police commissioner, Andrew Coster.

It's the first time such an order has been granted under the Terrorism Suppression Act. With more on this story we're joined by our reporter Ben Strang in the Wellington studio.
