Dunedin supermarket stabbing: Off-duty cop subdued attacker

It has been revealed an off-duty police officer who just happened to be shopping a Dunedin Countdown played a critical role in subduing the man accused of seriously stabbing four people in a violent daytime attack.

A second officer who was instore at the time stepped in to help too. The four injured people are still in hospital and are said to have a long road to recovery.

A 42-year-old man accused of four counts of attempted murder appeared into Dunedin District Court as more details of the swift actions of bystanders and staff emerged. Among them a Corrections Department worker.

The 42 year old was granted interim name suppression and been remanded in custody until June 1 when he will appear in court again.
