Greyhound racing under review: 'Too many incidents' - Robertson

From Checkpoint, 5:10 pm on 16 April 2021

Greyhound racing could face a "fundamental" shake-up if its shown to be dragging its feet over animal welfare.

And the Minister of Racing can't rule out shutting the industry down altogether. The government has ordered a review of greyhound racing because its not satisfied earlier welfare recommendations have been fully implemented and it says the industry's failed to provide sufficient information on the changes its making.

The 2017 Hansen report uncovered "unacceptably high" rates of dog euthanasia as well as high numbers of injuries and unaccounted-for dogs.

Racing Minister Grant Robertson says he's far from convinced we're leading the way on animal welfare.
