Decile 1 to 10: Access to cigarette sales compared

From Checkpoint, 5:16 pm on 15 April 2021

One of the concerns raised in the Smokefree 2025 discussion document is the closeness of schools to places selling cigarettes.

Fifty-four percent of secondary schools have at least one tobacco retail outlet within 500 metres of the school, according to research from 2016.

That rises to 83 percent within 1km. And there are even more in disadvantaged areas.

Checkpoint reporter Louise Ternouth and camera operator Nick Munro went to test these claims out.
