The man fatally shot by the police in Papatoetoe last night was a 501 deportee from Australia.
The police say 34-year-old Tangaru Noere Turia was deported from Australia in 2017, under section 501 of that country's Immigration Act.
He was on active charges at the time of last night's incident.
The incident has left residents in the usually quiet Papatoetoe neighbourhood shaken.
