Le Laperouse refuels at Noumea as cyclone looms

From Checkpoint, 5:24 pm on 2 February 2021

On Tuesday night Checkpoint had an update about the cruise ship denied entry to New Zealand because Immigration has refused a large chunk of the crew visas as they are not considered essential workers.

Le Laperouse was off the coast New Caledonia, low on fuel, with a storm approaching and no guarantee it would be allowed to dock and restock.

The luxury cruise ship has an exemption to come to New Zealand and has been chartered for trips including one to the sub-Antarctic.

The first was scheduled to depart next week but it is now in limbo.

Ponant Cruises owns the ship and its Asia Pacific boss Sarina Bratton joins Lisa Owen with the latest.
