From Checkpoint, 5:25 pm on 1 February 2021

Myanmar's leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been detained in an early morning raid, and a military coup is underway.

The military has declared a state of emergency, and the commander-in-chief of the armed forces has taken power.

There's been escalating tensions between the civilian government and the powerful military in the aftermath of a recent election.

The army says it carried out the detentions in response to what it's deemed a fraudulent election.

Now state TV says it's having technical issues, and is unable to broadcast. Journalists on the ground have also reported problems with internet connections, and phone lines.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says New Zealand is deeply troubled by recent developments in Myanmar, including reports that Aung San Suu Kyi, and other political leaders, have been detained by the military.

It's calling for the swift release of all of those detained, and for any issues to be resolved through peaceful dialogue.

An MFAT spokesperson says an election has taken place and the democratic will of the people should be respected.

The 58 New Zealanders registered as being in Myanmar are being advised to avoid any unnecessary travel for the time being.
