Covid-19: Māori Party leaders cancel Waitangi visit plans

From Checkpoint, 6:11 pm on 28 January 2021

Covid-19 has curbed Waitangi commemorations for The Māori Party. The co-leaders have decided not to travel north because of concerns over the latest community cases.

Three people have caught the more contagious South Africa strain of the virus while in MIQ at Auckland's Pullman Hotel but were released into the community before it was picked up.

The hotel's shut to new guests until authorities work out how it spread. Te Pāti Māori says it decided to err on the side of caution.

Co-leader Debbie Ngarewa-Packer discusses the decision with Lisa Owen.
