'Staring into the eyes of Jaws' - 12yo's encounter with mako

From Checkpoint, 5:30 pm on 28 January 2021

A 12-year-old boy who encountered a three-metre long mako shark at a popular Auckland city beach says it was like "staring into the eyes of Jaws".

SafeSwim issued an alert for Kohimarama and its neighbouring beaches yesterday following the sighting.

Keen sailors and twin brothers, Niko and Stavros Purdie, were sailing their Optimus yachts with their Kohimarama Yacht Club team, when they saw a large shadow.

Stavros described the experience to reporter Eva Corlett.
