Christmas is still a few weeks away, but the country's retailers are getting an early gift. Shop owners lose thousands of dollars a year to contactless fees, but now the government has taken a big step towards bringing costs down.
It's proposing caps on merchant service fees. Currently New Zealand retailers pay thousands more in contactless fees than their Australian counterparts.
But National says the government's proposal is not enough to save retailers from what it sees as anti-small business policies.
