In an early Christmas gift to Aucklanders, the Council has decided to ease residential water restrictions this summer.

The city has been under restrictions since May, when storage across all reservoirs fell to just over 44 percent as the region experienced its worst drought on record.

But with the dams now filling up - currently at 72 percent - the Auckland Council has agreed to let residents use their hoses from mid-December.
