More than 1 million NZers take up te reo Māori challenge

From Checkpoint, 5:50 pm on 14 September 2020

More than a million New Zealanders took up the challenge of using te reo Māori for the first ever national Māori language moment.

With Covid-19 restrictions putting a stop to the annual Māori Language Week parades, the Māori Language Commission instead encouraged people to use the reo in some way, shape or form at noon.

And the nation responded with one in five New Zealanders registering to take part. Workplaces and schools across the country got in behind the kaupapa to waiata, kōrero, or whakarongo te reo Māori for Te Wa Tuku Reo Māori - the Māori Language Moment. Meriana Johnsen has more.
