Queensland family told to choose one child to see dying father in NSW

The family of a terminally-ill Brisbane man is fighting for permission to bring his four children over the state border to see him one last time, after initially being told only one of his kids would allowed into Queensland.

Thirty-nine-year-old Mark Keans has cancer and is not expected to live until Christmas. His four children live in Sydney and his extended family are in Port Macquarie - all in New South Wales.

But the border between the neighbouring states is locked down due to Covid-19.

It comes as Hollywood star Tom Hanks was granted an exemption this week to self-isolate at a private hotel. AFL players along with their families have also been granted exemptions to self isolate together at a private hotel in preparation for next month's Grand Final.

Mark's sister Tamara Langborne says a month after applying for an exemption they have had no decision from the Queensland government, just the initial suggestion from officials to choose one of the four children to visit their dying father.

Queensland Premier Anastacia Paluschak insists it is not her decision, saying instead its the decision of Health officials. But as state premier she does have the final say on who comes across the border and who does not.

Liberal National Party Shadow Health Minister Ros Bates told Checkpoint's Bridget Burke the lack of humanity and compassion shown makes Queenslanders sick.
