China accuses NZ of violating international law

China has accused New Zealand of "gross interference in China's internal affairs" after the government here suspended its extradition treaty with Hong Kong.

New Zealand says the law that criminalises political protest with penalties such as life imprisonment undermines the 'one country, two systems' framework and goes against past commitments from China.

It's leaving the door open for the future, saying it's willing to review the decision if China returns to treating Hong Kong the way it promised to in 1997.
