The Prime Minister has poured cold water on the borders opening any time soon to anyone who's not a New Zealand citizen or permanent residents.
Jacinda Ardern says the spike in cases in Victoria doesn't necessarily push back the prospect of a trans-Tasman bubble, because she says the ball is in Australia's court regarding whether it will open up state by state, or as a whole country.
Meanwhile, National Party leader Todd Muller today said keeping the borders shut until other countries have recovered from Covid is "untenable".
He told a Wellington Chamber of Commerce event the country would be "on its knees" if it waits for a vaccine, or for other countries to eradicate the virus.
