Faafoi answers questions over housing waiting list

From Checkpoint, 6:06 pm on 23 June 2020

A South Auckland family with a boy using a wheelchair are living in a garage because of lack of suitable state housing. Maria and her two children have been camped out in a relative's garage for six months.

Her seven-year-old son has cerebral palsy and relies heavily on a wheelchair and her daughter has epilepsy.

They sleep three to a double bed and there are four generations of whānau using the attached granny flat.

The family's on the housing waiting list, but MSD has had to apologise to Maria after directing her to properties that are not wheelchair friendly.

Since Checkpoint got involved the family has been reassessed and their priority rating has gone up four spots.

Associate housing minister Kris Faafoi joined Lisa Owen live to discuss the issue. He apologised to the family and has requested their case be expedited tomorrow.
