Flags are at half mast tonight following the shooting death of a police officer in the West Auckland suburb of Massey this morning.
The officer was killed after police tried to unsuccessfully stop a vehicle at 10.28am.
On Friday evening an emotional Police Commissioner Andrew Coster held a press conference describing the situation.
It's the first police death in the line of duty since Senior Constable Len Snee during the Napier siege in May 2009.
Waitemata District Commander Superintendent Naila Hassan spoke briefly about the tragedy affecting not only her patch - but every police officer and their families.
