A Christchurch man who filmed himself coughing and sneezing on supermarket customers during the nationwide lockdown, has been fined $750 and sent to prison on other charges.

Raymond Gary Coombs was charged with offensive behaviour for the incident at Fresh Choice in Barrington, on April 4.

It caused a public outcry and led to the 38-year-old being labelled as an idiot by the Prime Minister.

Coombs appeared at the Christchurch District Court on Tuesday afternoon, and was also sentenced to 16 months in prison for two driving charges.

RNZ reporter Anan Zaki was at court.
