More than 7000 now-unemployed New Zealanders have applied for the Ministry for Social Development's new Covid-19 income relief payments since they became available on Monday.
It comes as the government ignores renewed calls to lift the standard jobseeker benefit of $250 a week so it matches the $490 Covid-19 payment.
But, as Nick Truebridge reports, those pleas are falling on deaf ears.
