Should The Warehouse have taken wage subsidy before restructure?

From Checkpoint, 5:07 pm on 9 June 2020

Questions are being raised around whether The Warehouse Group acted in good faith by taking millions of dollars in Government wage subsidies before announcing at least 1000 jobs could go.

The company, which owns The Warehouse, Warehouse Stationery, Noel Leeming, TheMarket and Torpedo7 appeared to have had plans to restructure its business before the nationwide lockdown.

But an official announcement only came on Monday that about 1000 jobs could go. That is despite the company claiming $68 million in wage subsidies.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said today she's angry. It follows companies like Bunnings and Air New Zealand and the clothing chain Max Fashions which today announced the closure of 17 of its 42 stores.

Checkpoint reporter Nick Truebridge has the story.
