The government is reassuring worried parents and teachers that its plan to partially reopen schools and early learning centres next week is safe and workable.

In briefings on Tuesday, the Education Minister Chris Hipkins and government officials insisted they are not putting anybody at risk.

More than 35,000 people have signed a petition opposing the decision to let children up to Year 10 return to class if their parents need to go back to work next week.

And the Early Childhood Council has told its members not to reopen until the country reaches alert level two.
