Covid-19 lockdown: Immediate bubbles can now visit deceased in funeral homes

From Checkpoint, 5:38 pm on 30 March 2020

Family members within the same bubble of a deceased person will now be able to visit them in a funeral home, after the Ministry of Health announced new guidelines for funerals and tangihanga on Monday afternoon.

Until now, only one member of the family could visit the funeral home to facilitate arrangements, and the deceased needed to be buried, cremated or refrigerated immediately.

But the Ministry of Health's Deputy Director-General Maori Health, John Whaanga, says after receiving feedback from funeral directors, they are easing the restrictions slightly for those within the immediate bubble of the deceased.

John Whaanga spoke to Mani Dunlop about what changes they are now applying to tangihanga and funerals.
