No commitment to cover vege, fruit stock losses - Consumer Affairs Minister

From Checkpoint, 5:19 pm on 30 March 2020

Shoppers will be able to dob in alleged price gouging by supermarket chains - after the government set up a special email address for people to send their complaints too.

The two main brands Progressive and Foodstuffs have a duopoly in NZ and the closure of green grocers and butchers during the lock down has raised concerns about further market domination and increased prices for shopper who have little other choice.

Countdown supermarkets pushed pause on store specials when the lockdown started but said today it will bring back promotions and deals as demand starts starts to even out.

The new email address is pricewatch@mbie.govt.nz.

Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Kris Faafoir tells Lisa Owen there is no commitment on compensation for independent fruit and vegetable traders whose stock has gone to waste.
