Covid-19 lockdown in NZ: What happened on day one

Day one of the nationwide lockdown is drawing to an end and the Prime Minister has thanked New Zealanders for doing their bit to contain Covid-19.

There are 78 new cases, with seven people in hospital - all in a stable condition.

While the lockdown had completely escaped some people approached on the streets by the police last night, Jacinda Ardern has since clarified some of them were homeless.

To support them and others the government on Thursday announced a $27 million package to ensure people have access to food, a place to live and somewhere safe to go, such as Women's Refuge, if needed.
