If you're travelling overseas, come home now before it's too late - that's the message from the government as borders and transport links across the world shut down because of Covid-19.

New Zealanders in Europe, the UK, the United States and Australia are scrambling to book flights home, some forking out thousands of dollars to get back as soon as possible.

The Foreign Minister, Winston Peters, estimates there are about 80,000 New Zealanders travelling internationally at the moment and he's warning not all of them will make it.

As RNZ reporter Katie Scotcher explains, there was much confusion at Heathrow airport on Wednesday morning as New Zealanders found they could no longer board an Air New Zealand flight home transiting in Los Angeles.
