Trump clarifies after EU-US travel ban announcement

From Checkpoint, 6:06 pm on 12 March 2020

US President Donald Trump has suspended all travel from Europe to the United States for 30 days, because of Covid-19.

In a prime time address from the Oval Office, the US President criticised Europe for not doing enough to stop the spread of the coronavirus, and as a result, he's shutting the border to travellers from there.

The president has since tweeted that the restriction stops people not goods, in an apparent roll back on those comments about the rules affecting international cargo.

Mr Trump says there will be financial support for individuals and businesses negatively affected by the coronavirus.

His move to suspend all travel between Europe and the United States saw our markets here take a dive.

Shares in Auckland International Airport have been placed on a trading halt and Air New Zealand, Ryman Health, A2 Milk, Skycity and Tourism Holdings all took huge hits on Thursday.
