Govt restricts arrivals from Italy to 14 days' quarantine

The government has in the past half hour extended its restrictions on travellers arriving in New Zealand from Italy to prevent more cases of Covid-19 spreading.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says travellers coming from any part of Italy will now be required to self-isolate for 14 days, but unlike Australia a full ban on travellers is not being introduced.

She says that is because the self-isolation option offers more flexibility and is working well for New Zealand. Ms Ardern has encouraged anyone travelling to Italy from New Zealand to reconsider their plans.

Italy has the highest death count from Coronavirus outside of China, with 463 people killed.

In New Zealand there are still only five confirmed cases of Covid-19. But the effects of the illness are continuing to hit hard.

One of the world's biggest music festivals, Coachella, joined the growing list of events which are being cancelled or postponed amid the outbreak.

And as border closures and travel restrictions ramp up, New Zealanders planning on trips to Europe or America for their summer are scrambling to see how they will be affected.

Travel agents say people are opting to delay or cancel their trips, but that could end up being a costly change for holiday-goers, depending on what their insurer is willing to cough up.
