Beatings described in Hawke's Bay slavery trial

From Checkpoint, 6:20 pm on 21 February 2020

A Samoan man who the Crown says was trafficked to New Zealand and used as a slave, says he was being constantly beaten by the man who brought him here. He is one of 13 complainants giving evidence in the High Court in Napier at the trial of 65-year-old Joseph Auga (like onga) Matamata, a Hastings-based chief who denies 24 charges of human trafficking and slavery between 1994 and 2017. Ruth Hill reports.
