Waitangi: Iwi challenge MPs to act on promises to Māori

From Checkpoint, 5:47 pm on 4 February 2020

The challenges to New Zealand's politicians came thick and fast as party leaders were welcomed onto the treaty grounds at Waitangi on Tuesday.

For the third year in a row politicians gave their speeches from the upper marae. For a day that used to marked by protest, the only protests today were from the MPs themselves.

Those giving the welcoming speeches from Ngāpuhi wasted no time telling the Prime Minister and other leaders Maori are still suffering from poor health, poverty and high rates of imprisonment.

RNZ political editor Jane Patterson and videographer Simon Rogers are in Waitangi and filed this report.
