It's back to school time and many families are breathing a sigh of relief that this year they won't be asked to cover expensive school donation costs.

The 'no-donations' policy was brought in by Education Minister Hipkins in 2019, and means the government will pay $150 per student to low decile schools in lieu of a donation.

The scheme will cost $63 million and is a boost to the budget of many schools.
