Govt buys land near Northport for rail line

The government is busy buying up land near Northport ahead of a cabinet decision on whether to move the bulk of Auckland's freight there.

On top of Wednesday's infrastructure announcements, the government is using more than $100 million of Provincial Growth Funding to upgrade Northland's rail infrastructure.

A large chunk of that will be spend on land between Marsden Point and Northport.

RNZ political reporter Charlie Dreaver has the story.
