From Checkpoint, 5:14 pm on 24 January 2020

The driver involved in a fatal police pursuit near Taupō last night is alleged to have travelled through a cordon at 140km/h before officers began their chase.

Police were already at the scene of a one-vehicle crash, where the driver died , when they were warned of another car approaching at speed.

They opted to take up the chase, which ended shortly after when the driver crashed - his passenger died at the scene.
