US man with 75 percent burns to body faces marathon recovery

From Checkpoint, 5:31 pm on 24 December 2019

The family of a US man who recently came out of a coma after suffering burns to 75 percent of his body say he faces a marathon recovery not disimilar to those burned on Whakaari-White Island. Pierre Gibbons ran into his neighbour's burning house in Baltimore to save a woman who was inside back in September. His heroic actions managed to get her out of the house but he was badly burned and has been told he will be in hospitals and rehab centres for the next three to five years. Checkpoint's Nita Blake-Persen spoke to Pierre's son Jeremiah about what that recovery will involve but started by asking him what happened on the night of the fire.
