A former police negotiator says police should be commended for saving children from a hostage situation in Tauranga on Sunday.
The police shot a man dead after he was holed up for 15 hours holding two young girls hostage - aged four and six years old - take a watch or listen.
On Monday the man's body was removed from the house, in the presence of family members, and the children were released from hospital unharmed.
