Guns for APEC security makes mockery of NZ law - Greens

From Checkpoint, 6:12 pm on 20 November 2019

The Green Party says letting illegal guns into New Zealand for the APEC summit makes a mockery of the work being done to reform the country's gun laws.

The Greens are opposing a bill that would allow overseas security agents to carry restricted weapons while in New Zealand for APEC in 2021.

The party's justice spokesperson, Golriz Ghahraman, says the country's existing laws should be enough to provide security for any foreign visitors during the summit in 2021.

The bill has just passed its first reading with National throwing its support in with Labour and New Zealand First.

RNZ political reporter Jo Moir spoke with Ms Ghahraman and began by asking her what sort of weapons might be brought into the country.
